The pilot operated pressure relief valve can be thought of as a combination of a directly operated pressure relief valve with a cone seat and a spool valve.
The pressure present at port 1 also acts on the cone of the directly actuated pilot control unit through a bore in the main spool. When the pressure set on the valve is reached, the pilot control unit opens first. Due to the resulting pressure drop in port 1, the main spool is now displaced and thus releases the complete opening cross-section from port 1 to port 2.
Due to the design, these valves have a higher leakage.
The pressure in port 2 is added to the preset pressure.
