A garbage truck is a truck specially adapted for collecting solid waste and transporting it to a waste treatment facility, such as a landfill, recycling center, or transfer station. Other common names for garbage truck include refuse collection vehicle, trash truck, refuse truck, dustcart, rubbish truck, junk truck, bin wagon, dustbin lorry, bin lorry, or bin van.

There are three main types of garbage trucks. They are based on their design which is mainly focused on which side the waste is collected. The first type is a front-loading garbage truck, used mainly in the United States of America. This type of truck has forks equipped on the front, which the operator aligns with sleeves on the waste container. The container is then lifted over the truck and is flipped upside down once it gets to the top of the truck's container. Once the garbage is dumped, it is compacted by a hydraulically powered moving wall that oscillates to push the waste to the rear of the vehicle.

    

The second type is a rear loader. It has an opening at the rear of the truck, into which a waste collector can throw garbage bags or empty the contents of bins. It can also be equipped with a mechanism to lift larger containers and empty them automatically, similarly to a front-loaded truck. The modern rear loaders usually compact waste using a hydraulically powered mechanism that employs a moving plate or shovel to scoop the waste out from the loading hopper and compress it against a moving wall. Hydraulic systems of those trucks create a need for valves to be used in garbage trucks.

The third main design of a garbage truck is a side-loader. As the name suggests, it's loaded from the side. This process, similar to a rear-loaded garbage truck, can be done either manually or automatically, with the assistance of forks or a hydraulic, robotic arm with a claw.
